Barnet

Our aims plans and objectives

Barnet Borough is situated in North London, covers an area of 33.8 square miles and is split into 21 wards. The Boroughs of Harrow, Brent, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and the County of Hertfordshire bound it. At the last census (2001) it had a population of 314,564 (second largest in London) and 126,944 households. (Mid year 2004 estimates give a population of 326,747)

25% of the population is aged under 20. Barnet's unemployment rate stands at 4.1% of the economically active section of the population.

The 2001 Census showed that Barnet has the twelfth largest number of residents belonging to minority ethnic groups in London. The largest single groups are Indian (8.6%) and Black African (4.3%). Barnet has the seventh largest number of Indian residents of any of the 32 London boroughs and the twelfth highest number of Black African residents. Various minority groups originating from Ireland and other Asian countries are also resident in the Borough.

Religion also plays an important role in Barnet. The Census revealed that although the majority of residents are Christian, some 14.8% are Jewish, the highest proportion for any local authority in England and Wales. The next largest group was that claiming to follow no religion, followed by Hindus and Muslims.
