Guidelines for calling at a Police Station

Reporting a crime

It is not normally necessary to attend a Police Station to report a crime.  You can report a minor crime via the internet, further details can be found by viewing here .  Certain other types of crime can be reported by telephone.  However you may attend a Police Station to report a crime if you feel that you need to speak to a member of police staff.  If you are attending a Police Station, please make sure that you have as much detail as practical - for example if you are reporting a mobile phone stolen, obtain the IMEI number beforehand.

Producing your driving documents

Remember to bring the HO/RT 1 or other form the officer gave you. Ensure that you bring all the documents you have been required to.

  • The driver or person named on the HO/RT1 must produce their driving licence in person. If you are producing your insurance it must be the Insurance Certificate or Cover Note that will cover you for the relevant time. Insurance, Other documents such as insurance certificate, MOT certificate, V5 etc can be produced on your behalf by another person.

  • If your are producing your documents in answer to a Endorsable Fixed Penalty Notice (EFPN), a yellow ticket, it is likely that your driving licence will be retained so that the points may be added. The document is normally returned within 4-6 weeks. If you have 12 or more points on your license including the new offence. Your licence will be returned to you and you will be summoned to court for the new offence. This is because under totting -up rules, when you accumulate 12 points on your driving licence you are likely to be disqualified from driving.

  • Secure;

Reporting an Accident

If you have been involved in a road traffic accident where no-one was injured and both parties have stopped and fully exchanged names, addresses and registration marks, there is no legal requirement to report the matter to police.

If however, someone was slightly injured or the other person didn?t stop, or refused to give any details then you will need to complete a Form 207 a Self Reporting Accident form. Ask the Station Officer for one and then you can either take it home and complete it or fill it in at the station. Remember to bring with you, your driving licence, insurance certificate and MOT certificate if you have one, which covers you for the date of the accident.

If the other vehicle didn?t stop and either you or any other witness did not record the registration mark unfortunately police cannot investigate the matter further. You should then ask the Station Officer for a Form 209 ? Collision Proforma, this report can be held on record with our Criminal Justice Unit in case a witness should come forward. There is no need to bring your driving documents to complete this form.

If you have made a note of a registration mark of the other vehicle concerned, this should be signed and dated by you and by the Station Officer. The note should be handed in with the accident form that you complete. If this is not practicable because of what it is written on, then you must keep it in a safe place, as it will be needed if the case goes to court.

The Self Reporting Accident form, once completed, will be sent to the Criminal Justice Unit Traffic section that covers the area where the accident took place. If your accident was in the London Borough of Bromley, you should contact the Criminal Justice Unit at Bromley Borough Police Station on 020 8284 8705. If you need a reference number for insurance purposes, please give 5 to 7 working days before contacting them on the number above. When you call, please have your registration mark or accident location to hand to help identify your accident.

If you need a copy of the traffic accident report, you must put your request in writing to the Criminal Justice Unit for the area where the accident happened. The address for Bromley Borough is:

CJU Traffic
Bromley Borough Police
High Street
Bromley
