Man jailed for murder of architect
A man has today been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of architect Bernard Hegarty who was killed while shopping in his lunch break in August last year. Christopher Olokun first attempted to rob 29-year-old Mr Hegarty in a Bethnal Green street, then stabbed him in the chest. Mr Hegarty, who lived in Tottenham, died in hospital. As well as the life sentence for murder, 32-year-old Olokun was sentenced for ten years, to run concurrently, for a string of robberies. Detective Chief Inspector Jim Condron, of the Met's Specialist Crime Directorate, said: "This was an appalling, unprovoked and pointless murder which has had a devastating impact on Mr Hegarty's family and friends. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them at this difficult time. "Bernard was a well-loved and caring man who had a bright future ahead of him, as a qualified and respected architect. He had been looking forward to moving into a new flat in London and was shopping for furnishings when he crossed paths with Olokun. "Bernard was a strong and courageous man who refused to be intimidated by Olokun's threats. Unfortunately it was his courage which cost him his life. We can only hope that Olokun's conviction here today provides Bernard's family with some small comfort and solace. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bernard's family for remaining so strong throughout their ordeal as well as my team of officers who worked tirelessly to secure this result. The Metropolitan Police refuses to tolerate such acts of unprovoked and senseless violence and remains committed to investigating such offences."
