Camera technology to combat anti-social behaviour
From today, Haringey officers will be using the latest high-tech camera technology in an effort to tackle anti-social behaviour. Operation Aventail will target a number of offences over a five-day period and Safer Neighbourhood (SN) officers will set off on patrol using unique head-mounted cameras. Being used for the first time the cameras, which are the size of an AA battery, are mounted on to police headgear. Officers can then patrol as usual with the cameras recording digital images to a special utility belt. The equipment, which costs around £1,800 per pack and is funded by Haringey Council's Safer Communities Partnership , will be used to gather evidence and images will form part of any future court proceedings. Along with the cameras officers will also be using a number of other tactics for the initiative, including; Airport-style search arches at various locations across Haringey to trace anyone carrying an offensive weapon. Automated Number plate Recognition (ANPR) checks to deter motor vehicle crime. Intensive patrols of 'Hot Spot' areas and major transport hubs to prevent robberies and fare evasion. The use of overt and covert patrols across the borough to detect suspicious activity and to offer visible reassurance to local residents and business. Detective Superintendent Richard Wood who is leading on Operation Aventail said: "The cameras will act as an excellent deterrent for any youngsters who are intent on causing trouble. Should anyone commit any offences the officers will instantly have the evidence to hand to help them apply for an ASBO or pursue criminal charges. If the cameras prove successful they will be deployed to other units within Haringey and could be used to assist police raids and officers working at football matches."
